Best Available Techniques And Control Of Emissions To Air

Environmental Permits and Managment

We work to support clients undertaking various industrial activities that require the best available techniques and control of emissions to air.

The first stage of our work is to understand your operation, identify applicable environmental legislation and advise on the type of Environmental Permit required. We will also gain an understanding of emissions off your processes and begin the work of determining the Best Available Techniques (BAT) required to control the emissions. BAT is fundamental to industrial operations and a basic requirement of regulation.

Following scoping, we delve deeper into operations through a process of data collation and assessment. This allows us to establish fundamental parameters for your process emissions and identify gaps. Where gaps are identified we will complete work to remedy this including specifying an appropriate emissions monitoring regime and delivering monitoring work. Once we have gathered adequate data we undertake risk screening of emissions; this allows us to focus on significant pollutants and, if required, completed more detailed risk assessment including dispersion modelling of emissions to air.

By now we will have a high-level understanding of operations and can begin design work for emissions abatement. We will complete a full review of Best Available Techniques for your sector and establish the feasibility of the various options specific to your unique circumstances. A conceptual design of the system is then provided for review and discussion. During conceptual design we also offer the option of a Hazard Identification (HAZID) study to identify potential system hazards at an early stage. It is at this stage that we are also ready to commence work on your Environmental Permit application.

Once you approve the design concept our work progresses to the preliminary design stage: here we develop the concept and produce engineering data sheets, system design sketches, system Process and Instrumentation Diagrams and a system Control Philosophy. We now have a detailed view on the abatement system you require and our work progresses to completing a Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) study. This will be informed by the early HAZID study (if completed) and provides detailed examination of each individual system element and the consequences of abnormal conditions.

Once the HAZOP is complete we are ready to move your abatement solution towards implementation. To do this we will develop a Tender Specification package which can then be issued to vendors. We will then support you by providing technical review of returned tenders, attend meetings with the various vendors and advise on the technical merits of proposed solutions as against our preliminary design.

Whilst all of the above has been going on, in the background, work on your Environmental Permit application is well underway. We will complete all necessary reports required for a duly made submission including Environment Agency application forms, operational descriptions, environmental risk assessments, management system summaries, non-technical summary, and detailed site layout plans and drawings. Once the application is submitted we handle all follow up work including liaison with the Environment Agency, responding to any queries or questions and, ultimately, delivering the Environmental Permit you need to begin your operations.
